A Lesson in Practical Politics from Isaac Asimov
1972 from The Gods Themselves:
“Let me give you a lesson in practical politics…It is a mistake…to suppose that the public wants the environment protected or their lives saved and that they will be greatful to any idealist who will fight for such ends. What the public wants is their own individual comfort.”

Fat, lazy, stupid, and content = happiness in America.
Sad, really.
If only someone would rise up…someone with middle aged wisdom…someone who wanted to teach for knowledge sake…someone who cared about the children…
…if only…
hey, wait a minute!
Are you talking about Ftk?
Well, not her exactly, just someone who reminds me of her…
OK, that was wrong.
that quote is so true.
Ouch, that’s pretty cynical, there Mr. Asimov.
Then again, the cynics are usually right.
“Fat, lazy, stupid, and content = happiness in America.
Sad, really.”
Well said… and would be my point with the prior post. Fat, lazy, stupid, and content = happiness in America… and this is the “happiness” that God wants for me.
That’s called syncretism and it is not biblical.
Are you sure “syncretism” is the word you were looking for,Scot, or am I just not getting something?
Syncretism: Reese’s peanut butter cups.
I like syncretism.
yes, it is the word i was looking for.
So scott thinks we dont deserve to be happy, or that americans have a warped view of happiness?
Americans have an incredibly warped view of happiness.
What does being fat and lazy have to do with combining multiple separate religions into one? I mean, if those were tenants of a religion it would, but I’ve never heard of a religion that advocated that kind of thing.
So I still don’t get what you meant by syncretism.
Spell it out for me like I’m a slow, dumb child, please.
Syncretism is more than the combining of religions it is also the the combination of different forms of belief or practice; in this instance I meant combining common American beliefs with a bastardized form of Christianity.
I was not intending to imply that fat and lazy is syncretism or part of a religion; however, what I meant to imply (DAMN my poor communication!) is that many North American Christians have a warped view of what happiness is and then often try to project that onto their religious beliefs, or defend their attitudes that have been ingrained through socialization with religion.
For examples of such syncretism watch Oprah or Joel Osteen.
This is the biggest problems with my blog comments: try to be brief, write badly, assume too much, nonsensical point. I will try to do better.
Alright. It’s just that I’ve never heard of “syncretism” used in a way that wasn’t the “combining two religions sense.” I getcha. It wasn’t your communication abilities’ fault. XD
BIG WORD BAN:
No more big words allowed on this thread. It makes my barely literate readers feel inferior and they’re the ones who click on the most ads.
Kev,
LOL.
I will capitulate to your entreaty.
